Introduction To Butwal
•Butwal is one of the main and the most populated sub metropolitan cities of Nepal. It has been rapidly grown in past decades. Butwal was derieved from Khasyauli.
•Town’s oldest domestic area which is situated on the western bank of Tinau river, where many people used to live for trade and market, used to called it Batauli Bazaar. Butwal is the main trade hub for the people of hilly region like Arghakanchi, Parbat, Gulmi, Palpa, Syanja etc.
•It is one of the rapidly-developing cities in Nepal for health, education, construction, communication, trade, and banking sectors and so on. It had become a trade hub with a lot of market areas, supermarkets, malls and business opportunities.
•Similarly, Butwal is the third largest city for financial estate after Kathmandu Metropolitan city. Butwal is a lively city including the Panoramic views of the combination of hills, plains and the city.
Geography and Location
•It is located between the Chure hills with aside the Tinau River of Lumbini province of Rupandehi district. It is situated between the two national Highways Mahendra and Siddhartha Highways.
•It joins western part of Nepal with the capital city Kathmandu through the highways and air by Gautam Buddha International Airport at Siddharthanagar, Bhairahawa. It is also the home of the administrative headquarters of Lumbini Zone.
History
•The area was a loose town that acted as a trading post between the hilly districts of the Lumbini Province and the Indian people. Thus, historically Butwal played a crucial role to connect Nepali Pahadi people with their Indian neighbors.
•In the history, Butwal has played as a great joining city to the terrains of Terai and the kingdom of Awadh. It had played a notable role in the British annexation of Awadh and brag tales of bravery of their kings , mainly king Ujurshing.
•There’s a history of Nepal defeating the British in Jitgadhi fort about two hundred years ago. Sen dynasty kings used this fort as a winter capital. Khasyauli/Batauli/Butwal is also linked with trade of Lasha’s salt, gold, mountain herbs ghee, oil and clothes.
•About 500 years ago, Manikumukda sen King of Palpa brought Kashoudhan From India, Kashmir for trade. Newar community from Kathmadu and The Thakalis from Mustang came here for the expansion of the road, That time butwal was too popular for trade so, they decided to live here for trade.
•After the termination of the different multi-party system, it was made the Butwal Khasyuli Nagar Panchayat. After reinstatement of multi-party system, later it was named as Butwal municipality. After sometime Butwal, was promoted to a sub-metropolitan city.
Economy and Development
•Apart from its main role in the enhancement of trade in Nepal, Butwal has also perform as a great center for education. It is one of the famous education hubs of the Lumbini Province of Nepal, with some highly regarded colleges, a few private colleges, private and government schools lies here.
•It also brag on the performance of students with a best score better than anywhere in the country. There are many Educational Institutes Giving the opportunities to study Science, Engineering, Medicine, Fine Arts and Commerce and Management. Butwal is a workable option for healthcare to the rural hilly areas and the neighboring city.
•Like others, Butwal also plays the crucial role on the great industry of tourism. Not only it focus tourism but also focus all the sectors related to tourism. Likewise, There are numerous hotels and resort in the city with a reasonable price.
•Butwal also acts as the main media hub in southern Nepal, with a maximum number of FM stations and newspapers like Butwal Today. Also, the city has given birth to a number of reformer and famous political figures over the years.
Tourist Attractions
•There are many places to visit in this city. It is rich in every aspects like in greenary, natural places and historical etc. Hill Park, Shree Siddha Baba Temple, Banbatika, Manimukuna Sen Park, Nuwakot, Devdaha, Jitgadhi Fort, Muktinath Dham and Lumbini Cable Car etc.
•In my personal suggestion, You should visit Nuwakot to see the panoramic view of Butwal city. Especially in the evening, it looks more stunning.
•Near to the Shree Siddhababa Temple and the bank of Tinau river, fossils and the upper jaw of ancient hominoids Ramapithecus were found near the Tinau River. Later while testing it was found that, It was 10.1 million old tooth. Later, It was kept in the museum and the place became the tourist attraction place.
Transportation and Accessibility
•You can easily get here from any place of Nepal. You can get here through roads and by air. If you are from neighboring district like Palpa, Devdaha, Arghakanchi, Gulmi etc, then local busses runs from time to time.
•If you are from far you can come here by air via Gautam Buddha International Airport.
Local Cuisine
•There are many famous food in Butwal Some of them are Fulki, Sag Sukuti, Sekuwa, Jeri, Mix Lassi, Hydrabadi Dum Biryani, Dalle MoMo, Frankie, etc.
•Must try dish of Butwal city is famous Fulki at the top. It is literally the best thing you could find in the whole city. Fulki is a all time favorite food of Butwalians. Another food is Saag Sukuti and Sekuwa with local Alcohol at Badel Pokhari, Belbase. You should try it once.
•There are varieties of Cusine found in Butwal. According to your taste, you can find anything you like. Specially, Indian cusine is famous in Butwal. You can find other cusine also too.
Community and Lifestyle
•Maximum of the people have came from hilly region to do trade and to give the best facility to their children. From there, maximum of the people are hill brahmin which are in 30%. Other different caste people also live here like Chhetri, Magar, Newar, Tharu, etc.
•Maximum people used Nepali language to communicate. Most of the Joint family or students live here. Most of the People celebrate Dashain, Tihar, Holi, Id, Maghee Sakranti, Christmas etc.
•All the people live here with being cooperate, sharing happiness and sorrow with each other. They help each other when they need.
Future Prospects
•Butwal city is targeting the infrastructure development, education, health, opportunity and employment as the main priority. Butwal sub-metropolitan city has also playing a coordinating role to find a middle way solution to the land debate in the industrial area.
•Butwal is forward in physical infrastructure. Now, we have our own national level structures. There is an international convention center (BICC Hall) and an exhibition hall. New buildings of Lumbini Provincial Hospital, Amda Hospital, Shopping malls, big star hotels are operational and some are under in construction.
•Transport facilities for any place can be taken from Butwal, which is the summiting point of East-West Highway and Siddharth Highway. The Jhumsa water supply project, which was started 22 years ago for Butwal’s water supply, is still inert.
