Kali Gandaki River for Electricity Generation:

Key project FeaturesDetails
CategoryReservoir Drawdown and slicing and modifying the operating rule.
Reservoir Volume7.7 Million Cubic Meters (Mm3)
Installed Capacity144 Megawatt
Date of Commissioning2002

âś” The Kali Gandaki River, with an installed capacity of 144MW, is a run-of-river project primarily designed to manage the river’s high sediment load. It was in operation in 2002.

âś” Despite the Kali Gandaki River facing tough challenges such as turbine abrasion and rising flood levels in the upper reservoir, the project’s concrete gravity dam was generated by radial crest gates in sluicing modes, maintained by 3.5 Mm3 of storage for power peaking.

Operation ModeCondition
Sluicing Mode (Summer)Inflow > 2x Desing Power
Impounding Mode (Winter)Inflow <= 2x Desing Power
Flood ManagementInflow < 2000 m3/s

âś” Turbine abrasion has been mitigated by modifying the intake structure. Numerical sediment transport modeling addresses the rising flood of the upper reservoir.
