Introduction to Tinau River
Tinau River is a Grade II River originating from the Churia Range flows through Siwalik Hills. It was basically originated from Palpa. It is located in Palpa district of Lumbni Province.
✓Chidiya Khola and Dovan Khola are the tributaries of Tinau River. Tinau River expand in rainy season and shrink in winter season. In this type of rivers, the flow of water is high in summer and low in winter.
✓The expanse of the Tinau River is 95 km beginning from Palpa to Indo-Nepal Border at Marchawar. The minimum flow of river is about 2.2 m3/s (78 cu ft/s) and maximum flow is 2,500 m3/s (88,000 cu ft/s).
Location
✓Tinau rivers was mainly orginates from the Palpa district which flows towards southward between the Chure Hills.
✓It flows aside the Famous Shree Siddha Baba Temple. Chidiya Khola and Dhovan Khola are the tributaries of Tinau river. It flows through Siwalik Hills and the Terai of Nepal joining the Ganga River in the India.
Geographical Context
✓It was mainly originated from Mahabharat Mountains flowing through Kali Gandaki River and separate in Palpa then flows towards south aside with Butwal city later, it joins in the Ganga River of India.
Importance
✓People of Terai region is fully involved in agriculture so, this river plays vital role in the agricultural system of Terai Region.
✓Mainly, It is also used in irrigation of crops, vegetables, fruits etc. It is also used as drinking by purifying it. It also generates electricity which is important for people. Many people depend on water for their livelihood like fishing, agriculture etc.
✓Tinau river is a home of diversity which helps in the balance of ecosystem. In Hinduism, river is also symbolize purity so, people worship river as god.
Current Challenges
✓In the Rainy season, there is a high risk rather than in other season. Flood is the main challenges in the rainy season because it flows away all the things which is near to it like houses, bridges, trees etc. Overflow of water in the river is dangerous to the people living near to the river. Due to this, many people had lost their lives.
✓Another challenges is the water management system, when the water of river overflows it enters to the habitat which will be difficult to the inhabitants to control it.
✓Human activities like throwing all the household waste, dead animals in the river leads river dirty which will be difficult to drink and also impact on bio diversity and also affect in climate change.
✓There is a high risk of swepting suspension bridges so strong structure should be constructed.
Future Prospects and Management
✓If a big flood came in this river there should be a proper management like constructing gabions at the bank of river. Not only constructing but maintaining it also should be done in time.
✓Plantation should be done in the bank of river to prevent soil erosion. Retaining wall should be constructed in the side of river where the soil structure is dill. Dam also should build to store water for generating hydro electricity and for irrigation.
✓Energy Dissipating Structure should also make to decrease the velocity of flow of water that prevents soil erosion.
Conclusion
✓Tinau River is at the bank of Butwal City which is important for the inhabitants of Butwal in every aspect. We should preserve this river not only for us, but for future generation also.
✓If we preserve this river it will be beneficial in many aspects like for irrigation, for generating electricity, for drinking water, for agriculture and so on. It helps to balance the eco system so, we should presrve it.
